A motorcyclist riding around North Dunedin at 115kmh had to be tracked down by police dogs after fleeing his second crash of the night on foot.

The 22-year-old man had earlier in the night been driven home by officers after he had gotten into a fight with a 19-year-old in the Octagon on Saturday at 11.15pm, Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said. 

An hour after he was dropped home by police the allegedly drunk man was seen by community patrol crashing his motorbike in Lovelock Ave, North Dunedin. 

The community patrol called emergency services. However, while waiting for an ambulance, the man then got back on his bike and sped off. 

An approaching police patrol then clocked the man travelling at 115kmh in a 50km area as he drove towards them.

Officers turned to follow the motorbike.

Once they rounded a corner they came across the bike crashed for a second time.

However the rider was nowhere to be seen, Snr Sgt Notman said.

Numerous police entered the area and police dogs were called to track the man.

He was found a short time later and was taken to hospital for assessment.

A blood sample was also taken, he said.

The man’s motorcycle was impounded and he has numerous charges pending. 

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said one person was treated at the scene and transported to Dunedin Hospital in a moderate condition.
