Chief fire officer Ross Bryant said the rider was spraying a paddock in St Leonards and saw flames coming from under the fuel tank.
A ruptured fuel line caused the fire to reignite even when the owners were trying to extinguish the flames, he said.
The fire crew put out the fire in 10 minutes but the bike was ''totalled'', Mr Bryant said.
