Storage building coming together

The Otago Settlers Museum's new specialised storage building is starting to take shape, with more prefabricated concrete walls being lifted into place by crane.

Lund South Ltd is the main construction contractor on the $8.6 million project, which is due to be completed in August.

Construction began last year and most of the building's 84 twin-level wall panels are already in place.

Work resumed this week after the holiday break.

After the walls are in position, the suspended floor will be dropped in to place.

The roof will then be added and the building will be closed in by the end of summer, with internal fit-out then continuing, museum staff say.

The storage building will offer climate-controlled protection for the museum's heritage treasures, some of which have previously been damaged by excessive heat or moisture.

The new facility is the first stage of an overall $35 million settlers museum redevelopment project, which is due to be completed in 2012.
