The future of the Stadium Market is uncertain.
The market, which has been run every Sunday at the Forsyth Barr Stadium since October 2012, has finished until a new support organisation and manager are found to take it over.
The Rotary Club of Dunedin Central has ''ceased'' its involvement as the support organisation.
''We weren't getting enough customers/public through the market to make it economic to be able to run. It has ceased in the meantime. The Rotary Club is ceasing its involvement with it but we are more than happy to assist if someone wants to take the mantle up and get it running again,'' president Andrew Hamilton said.
The last market was held on March 28.
David Humphrey, of Stadium Market, believes the market still has a future.
''There is a future for it. What we need is a Rotary or Lions club to be the support group for the market ... to be accountable for money received and to make sensible allocations to charities and deserving organisations. I am optimistic. The market is a truly Dunedin community event,'' he said.
Mr Humphrey said while the number of stallholders ranged from 35 to 45, an average of 60 was needed.
''They want to carry on with the market. The market is used as a shop window. For those who make arts and crafts, it's the only outlet they have for their sales ... many of these small businesses can't afford a commercial premises. It is a great asset for Dunedin and a legacy for the youth of tomorrow, in some aspects,'' he said.
Mr Humphrey said the market was an accommodating and friendly place for everyone to ''relax and enjoy''.
Pineapple Bakery owner Numia Sreti has been going to the market since it started.
''The market has been very good for my business. My business has grown because of it. It is good advertising for our business. We started out from a small tent then went to a mobile trailer. Now we have a shop,'' he said.
Mr Sreti said if the market did start up again, he would consider going back.
''The market is gone. They have thrown in the towel and walked away. Some people do want to get out on a Sunday and they did enjoy coming to the market,'' he said.
