Tahuna ocean outfall project wins national award

The construction of the Tahuna ocean outfall project in Dunedin has won McConnell Dowell a national award.

Last night in Paihia, the construction company was presented with a New Zealand Contractors' Federation construction award for a project exceeding $20 million.

The Dunedin project included the construction of a 510m tunnel and laying 1000m of high density polyethylene pipeline on the sea floor.

Company spokesman Bruno Ferny said the adverse weather and marine conditions were the main challenges.

"We're very proud of achieving what we did... When you look now, there is no clue that we were ever there."
