A combination of lollies and energy drinks was the secret formula which kept a group of Taieri College pupils running through the night at the weekend.

The group of about 18 prefects from the college took part in the Relay for Life at the weekend.

While some of the pupils eventually surrendered to the sandman, others were able to resist even the slightest bit of shut-eye during the 24-hour event.

Pupil Rachel Irvine said the pupils consumed a large quantity of sugar and caffeine to keep going.

"Lots of people had energy drinks and I had lots of lollies and we just tried to keep ourselves entertained.''

At one point during the small hours of the morning a lack of sleep did start to take its toll on some of the group, Rachel said.

"There were points where the conversations were pretty interesting and the responses weren't the most intelligent - but we got through.''

Speaking to the Otago Daily Times yesterday after a nap, Rachel said while her legs were sore and her mind was a bit fuzzy, she would definitely take part in the event again.

"Yeah, it was pretty tiring and I think we're all pretty exhausted but it was a good experience.''

The idea to form a team came from the college's head girl Emma Cramond, Rachel said.

"We all thought it was a really good cause and we all knew somebody who has been affected by cancer so we wanted to do it for them.''
