A witness described hearing a "large thump and the screech of brakes" as a school pupil was hit by a truck in Kaikorai Valley this morning.
Police were called to the incident at 8.56am where a Mainfreight truck, which was heading south, hit a teenaged Kaikorai Valley College boy in Kaikorai Valley Rd near the intersection with Bryant St.
The boy was being treated by St John at the scene and was in a moderate condition.

It appeared the boy was hit at a pedestrian crossing and thrown 30m.
Another witness described hearing a "large thump and the screech of brakes" as the boy was hit and said it looked "pretty serious".
Nearby resident Warren Thompson comforted the boy and covered him in a blanket before emergency services arrived and said he did not look "too bad".

The driver of the Mainfreight truck looked extremely shaken and was being interviewed by police at the scene.

Kaikorai Valley Rd was being blocked by police heading southwards at Stone St.
The Serious Crash Unit was at the scene investigating the cause of the crash.
