Fortune Theatre manager Janice Marthen has resigned.
Mrs Marthen (50) moved to Dunedin from England to manage the Fortune Theatre in February 2005.
She began her theatre career in Melbourne, in her native Australia, where she co-ordinated the Melbourne Comedy Festival for seven years.
She then spent six years with the German Children's Theatre in Germany, before working at the Sunderland Empire Theatre and Durham Gala Theatre in England.
Fortune Theatre board chairman Robert Aitken yesterday praised her efforts and achievements.
"She's done five years and that was what she originally planned to do.
She's done a really good job and taken us forward," he said.
"Even though it's a small theatre, it's a big job."
Mr Aitken said the theatre had not yet made a decision on advertising the position.
"We're still consulting with local theatre people about it. We've got a good team around us here and we're trying to look at it alternatively. Do we break up the job and have a parallel manager and artistic director?
"We'll be having discussions about it next week at a full board meeting and with Creative New Zealand," Mr Aitken said.
Mrs Marthen's resignation is effective from December 24.
