A Dunedin man was pepper-sprayed after wielding a knife during a violent confrontation with an associate and resisting police.
The 47-year-old was pulled over for suspected drink-driving in Alva St in City Rise about 11.50pm on Tuesday and refused to give a blood test or comply with police instructions, police said.
The man had earlier been involved in a confrontation with an associate, whom he threatened with a knife, Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Temple said.
''Just after 10pm someone rang us to say they had been threatened by him,'' he said.
The altercation took place at an Alva St address and the pair knew each other.
The 47-year-old then left the area in a car but was later pulled over by officers as he returned to the address, Snr Sgt Temple said.
The man refused to undergo a blood test.
Sergeant Steve Aitken said the man resisted police and pepper-spray was used to subdue him.
He was arrested in the driveway of the Alva St address and was charged with threatening to kill, assault with a weapon, resisting police, refusing a blood test and refusing to accompany police.
He was remanded in custody yesterday and is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
