A drive-by shooting of a Mosgiel house bus could have had deadly consequences, police say.

A man was smoking a cigarette outside when a vehicle's occupants drove past his Argyle St property and fired what he thought were three gunshots near him at 10.30pm on Wednesday.

After initially ducking for cover, he played down the incident as the white Japanese five-door car possibly backfiring, Mosgiel Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said.

However, an inspection of his bus, parked at his property, revealed three bullet holes in its side, including one which had gone right through the aluminium body of the bus.

Police believe a firearm of at least .22 calibre, and possibly even .30 calibre, may have been used in the shooting.

Snr Sgt Lloyd said if one of the bullets had hit the man, or another member of the public, it was "potentially deadly".

Anyone with information about the incident was urged to contact police.
