Andy Gold (85) gave wife June (82) a pair of diamond earrings for their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday.
Mrs Gold said she was 95% blind, so her husband had to help her put on her jewellery.
''He has to read all the mail to me, and read all the cards, and reads the newspaper to me every morning ... but I think he only reads the bits that he likes,'' she laughs.
Mr Gold said he did not mind undertaking his new duties since his wife started going blind four years ago.
''I'll look after her. I love her,'' Mr Gold said.
Mrs Gold said her husband's ''bad hip'' meant she often helped him.
''What I can't see, Andy can see. He's got good eyesight and I haven't but I've got good hips.''
The couple's three daughters and son, and nine of their 11 grandchildren, were in Dunedin for a celebratory dinner at Etrusco in the Savoy Building last night.
The couple went to the Savoy on their first wedding anniversary and made a meal there an annual family outing.
''You couldn't be too fussy in those days, because there wasn't the choice of restaurants. The Savoy was it.''
