It might be just sales talk . . . but a Christchurch menswear retailer reckons men may be becoming snappier dressers during the downturn.
Munns Menswear director Peter Lucas said yesterday that his chain of eight stores was selling more ties than usual.
"What we are finding now, in these recessionary times, is that [businessmen] are wanting to be dressed up even more. It's quite critical to their job success. So we've had an upsurge in selling ties."
His company had also noted that men wearing casual wear on Fridays was "going a bit backwards" as well.
He said there was a noticeable trend towards men wanting to look good at work.
"Definitely. They want more security in their jobs. A lot of them, if they tend to stand out and they are not looking professional, there's a risk . . ."
Despite the trend, Munns is closing its Dunedin outlet with the loss of five jobs.
