Gibstopper Mike Jackson (left) and roof painter Steve Peat toast the end of the working year for tradespeople at the Mornington Tavern yesterday.

The tavern was kept busy as tradies celebrated tradies day — the annual booze-up marking the end of the working year. Tavern owner Murdoch Miskimmin said the bar was about as busy as last year, which was "pretty quiet for us".

Tradies day had quietened down since its heights about three or four years ago, when things admittedly "used to be a bit out of hand at times", he said.

Acting Senior Sergeant Sam Ramsay said Dunedin police had not encountered any problems directly related to tradies day.

"Police planned ahead for the event and extra staff are rostered on and will be deployed appropriately as required," he said.
