Two new fire appliances due

Southern firefighters are expecting to take possession of two new appliances in the next few months - an extra aerial fire fighting appliance and an incident command unit.

A spokesman said the appliances would be based at Dunedin's Central Fire Station.

The aerial unit, which features a large turntable ladder, was one of two "floating" units.

The other will be based in Christchurch, and would be available as a back-up for incidents around the South Island.

An older aerial appliance from Wellington was being used in Dunedin while the usual appliance underwent maintenance.

Dunedin's deputy fire chief, Trevor Tilyard, said a new Hazmat Command Unit would be arriving in Dunedin in May.

The high-tech unit will replace the existing one, which is about 20 years old.
