Another 80 equivalent full-time students have enrolled at the University of Otago, figures for the second semester show, meaning an increase of 380 equivalent full-time students compared to this time last year.

A statement from the university said there had been an 111 EFTS increase in full-fee international enrolments, a 7.5% gain on 2017, and a 272 EFTS rise in domestic figures, an increase of 1.6%.

The total increase this year broke down to 230 more EFTS in health sciences, 113 more in humanities, and 92 in sciences.

That was partly offset by a decline of 53 EFTS in commerce.

Planning and funding director David Thomson said he was not concerned by the drop in the number of commerce students, as it was a ''legacy effect'' from a decline a couple of years ago.

The university was ''pretty pleased'' with the results so far and still hoped to have more than 2000 Maori students and nearly 1000 Pacific students enrolled by the end of the year, he said.

University of Otago vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne said the figures were ''a testament to the strong reputation built by the incredibly hard work of our talented staff and students'' and were good news ahead of the university's 150th anniversary next year.

The university's foundation studies course - not included in the other figures - was ''marginally up'' on the same time in 2017.

By the end of the year, Otago is due to have a final enrolment of 18,841 EFTS, including the foundation studies course, up from 18,457 last year.

Enrolment numbers rose in 2010 but fell steadily between 2010 and 2015, picking up slightly in 2016 and dropping again last year.
