Senior Constable Lox Kellas, of Portobello, said two 19-year-old British men, in New Zealand on a gap year, were going to the Otago Peninsula about 11am, when the rear wheels of the van slid as they rounded a bend near Karetai Rd.
It appeared the driver overcorrected and the van went into a ditch and rolled on to its side.
The driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital for treatment for a cut on his elbow, but was released shortly afterwards.
The passenger was uninjured.
The men continued their journey with friends, who had been travelling in a van behind them, Snr Const Kellas said.
