The Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club needs the community to come to its rescue and vote to help it win a $25,000 prize.

President Nevan Trotter said the club was one of three South Island finalists selected in a competition run by BP to compete for a prize package including an inflatable rescue boat (IRB), outboard motor and trailer.

The winner will be determined by the highest number of votes and people can vote every day until the competition closes on Sunday, November 16.

''If we can win it, it will be a community asset and we want the community to get behind us. We need their support.''

The other clubs in the running were Warrington Surf Life Saving Club in Dunedin and South Brighton Surf Life Saving Club in Christchurch.

The club asked Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter managing director Graeme Gale and Dunedin Marine Search and Rescue chairman Don Peat to support the bid by starring in a short documentary on how the prize benefited the wider community.

''They were more than happy and didn't require much persuasion at all ... a lot of our equipment gets used for search and rescue from Green Island to the Taieri Mouth and a lot of our members are on the callout search and rescue squad and our equipment often gets used for that - our IRBs in particular.''

The club had two IRBs and one needed to be replaced so the prize would be ''timely'', and would match the newly built club facility.

''A lot of funding has gone towards the new buildings so we haven't been able to spend as much money as we would have liked on replacing equipment the last couple of years. A lot of our focus has been on the new building.''

He hoped holidaymakers who enjoyed the beach would be among those voting for the club.
