Daniel was happy to lose Arana College resident Daniel Leaper (18), of Nelson, holds his hair after he lost a bet with fellow students and had it cut off yesterday.

The University of Otago health sciences student bet fellow students they could not raise more than $5000 in the recent Relay for Life in Dunedin.

The college team ended up raising almost $7000 for the Cancer Society.

"Sometimes it’s good to lose a bet," he said.

The large quantity of hair cut from his head would be donated to Freedom Wigs in Dunedin, he said.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
