Water restored to Opoho homes

Water supplies were restored to about 200 homes in Opoho yesterday, after a water main was damaged when high winds brought down trees in Dunedin.

The wild weather, which generated gusts of more than 100kmh in and around the city on Tuesday afternoon, toppled at least seven trees in the area.

The ripped-up roots of one of the toppled trees had ruptured a Dunedin City Council water main, cutting supplies to about 200 homes overnight, council communications co-ordinator Rodney Bryant said.

Repairs yesterday meant the supply was gradually restored between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.

Homes were kept supplied from a water tanker overnight, he said.

Residents were warned to run their drinking water until any discoloration cleared, and were thanked for their "co-operation under very trying conditions".
