She is eager to go to work every day, has boundless enthusiasm for the job and is happy to be paid in biscuits.

Scoobie the fox terrier could be the perfect roofer's workmate except for one thing - once he is on the roof, he is stuck.

"Nah. He can't climb down himself, he just jumps on your shoulder while you climb down," said his owner, Dunedin plumber and roofer Keith Campbell, of United Plumbing and Roofing.

Scoobie has been climbing ladders for more than five years, ever since, as a 6-month-old puppy, an employee of Mr Campbell's trained him to climb using meat pies as inducements.

He sometimes tries to scale spouting as well, but not with quite the same success.

"He's become quite well known around the place. I often get people driving past who stop and say, 'Do you know there's a dog on the roof?' Usually, if I can't find him, he's up a ladder somewhere."

It was good to have the dog for company, Mr Campbell said.
