A man who stole a female swimmer's clothes from a Dunedin beach while she was swimming this morning has evaded police.

Police were called to Tomahawk Beach about 9am after a member of the public saw a man steal clothing from the shore while a woman was swimming.

A police spokeswoman said the man was not found and police were speaking with the person who reported the incident.
