Fire crews battled a small blaze in an air filter at an industrial premises in Dunedin's wharf area this morning.

Crews were called from Dunedin Central Fire Station about 9.20am to a metal fabrication business in Birch St.

A reporter at the scene said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tried for at least ten minutes to extinguish the small fire, which appeared to be in an industrial air filter and was generating large plumes of dark smoke.

Workers at the business were evacuated from the building as fire crews established a cordon.
