Finn "bring-a-bag-of-spare-balls" Allen stole the show with an incredible knock of 137 against Pakistan in the T20 cricket international in Dunedin yesterday.

The New Zealand opener blasted an international T20 record-equalling 16 sixes — several of them out of the ground — to help set up the home team’s monster total of 224 for seven, a record total at the University Oval.

He also set a new mark for the highest T20 score for a New Zealand batsman, eclipsing the 123 Brendon McCullum smashed in 2012.

Pakistan’s chase petered out at 179 for seven.

The Black Caps won by 45 runs, clinched an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-game series and extended their unbeaten streak across all three formats at the venue to 21 games, much to the delight of the capacity crowd of 4180.

Third-year University of Otago business student Ollie Ritchie, 20, cannot quite believe he has taken a catch from a towering six hit by Finn Allen.
But whatever.

The folk high on the embankment will remember this game for their student neighbour Ollie Ritchie, who pulled off a stunningly nonchalant catch.

Picture this. Allen has just sent one of his shots hurtling towards the crowd.

A relaxed-looking Ollie, sitting deep in his deck chair, plucked a one-hander out of the air like he was helping himself to a cheese roll out of a pie warmer.

He is a true Kiwi hero and, at the very least, should be recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Allen was not too bad either. He did get a standing ovation when he was eventually out. But New Zealand Cricket really should invoice him for all the balls he lost.
