Previously, kryptonite was the only known way to make him grimace.
But last night, dodgeball players found a well-placed bouncy ball, thrown at high speed, was a new way.
Sam Lowry was one of about 50 people who dressed up as their favourite hero to compete in the Super Hero Dodgeball fundraising event at the Metro Indoor Sports Centre in Dunedin.
Event co-ordinator Kelvin Cummings said it was a one-off event, aimed at raising funds for 10 East Otago High School year 10 pupils selected to go on the Spirit of New Zealand Trophy Voyage in November.
"I’ve got a wee soft spot for Marvel and DC super heroes. It’s a very popular fad with all of the movies coming out at the moment.
"It just seemed right. If you’re a dodgeballer, you have to dip, duck, dive and throw with super-human strength, and it just seems to tie in with what super heroes would do.
"If super heroes were going to play a sport, this is what they would do."
Dodgeball is a game in which players on two teams try to throw balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves.
Mr Lowry hoped more than $500 would be raised during the event.
