Penelope Couper, Imogen Davis and Dannielle Hall plan to make their one act play a wonder.

The Columba College trio recently won the Otago Southland regional final of the New Zealand Theatre Federation One Act Play Festival with their performance of The Rosenberg Sisters, by Michelanne Forster.

Penelope said the 25-minute play told the story of three Jewish sisters living in Wellington, showing their view of the world during and following World War 2. Although the set is minimalist, Imogen said the diversity and quirkiness of the characters made up for it.

"They are singers and dancers on the nightclub circuit, and they're three very different individuals. We use a few chairs, a couple of boxes and a few whisky bottles for our set and props. All very simple."

Adjudicator David Chambers praised the girls for their "extraordinary maturity and skill" in the portrayal and understanding of the story - particularly in a competition with adult actors.

"It's probably based on a real desire, amongst the girls, to tell it."

The girls won the best youth production award and the cup for the best play of the festival.

Although excited about winning the regional final, Dannielle said they were more excited about performing the play again this weekend at the South Island final in Te Anau this weekend - all in the bid to reach the national final in Nelson next month.

"It's a chance for us to perfect the play. There are some things we could do better second time around."
