Youngsters invited to audition

Otago schoolchildren will have a chance to take part in a production of the Walt Disney hit High School Musical.

Australian theatre company Epiphany Productions is holding auditions for its inaugural summer theatre school in Dunedin in January, after which a cast will be selected for the musical.

Epiphany Productions director Chris Fennessy said 30 young Otago performers aged between 10 and 18 would be needed for the show.

"I started my theatre training here in Dunedin and this is an opportunity to give something back to theatre," he said yesterday.

"There aren't many opportunities for young people to develop theatre skills in Dunedin."

Fennessy, who is now based in Brisbane, started his career at the Mayfair Theatre before spending more than 15 years performing in London's West End in shows such as Les Miserables.

The movie version of High School Musical has been viewed by more than 62 million people around the world since its debut in January 2006.

The musical will be directed by Mandy MacGibbon of Christchurch and will run from January 29 to February 7.

Auditions will be held at the Mayfair Theatre on Saturday.
