Bayfield's top achievers honoured

Top sporting achievers were recognised at Bayfield High School's sports and cultural prizegiving.

Alexander Hope (junior sports boy), Ella Roberts (junior sports girl), Mitchell Wilson (sportsman) and Faaoosala Lale (sportswoman) won the major all-round awards, while Shannon Hope won the Leighton Cup for best individual sports performance.

Ella Roberts had a good evening, receiving the trophies for year 10 girls athletics and contribution to the year 10 girls basketball team, the Barron Cup for best all-round player in year 10 netball, the Captains Trophy for junior girls football, and the Steers Cup for junior girls volleyball.

James Riach won the R. Vann Trophy for year 11 boys cross-country, the Wallis Trophy for service to rugby, and the Bayne Trophy for most valuable softball player.

Sporting blues were presented to 33 pupils across 12 sports.

 

Tokomairiro High School

Results following the recent completion of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council census for the year show Tokomairiro High School has increased its overall sport participation rate to 63%, up 5% from the 2013 survey.

The increase in sport participation is a result of new options being offered, such as forming a girls volleyball team. These year 9 and 10 pupils travel to Dunedin on Friday nights and complete against Dunedin schools.

A recent revival of the Toko equestrian team has also influenced these results. The five-member equestrian team competed recently at the interschool show jumping event in Gore. The team placed seventh in the competition, the highlight being a first and third for Karta Hewitt in her individual event.

The touch season has started and Toko has more than 80 pupils playing in competitions in Balclutha, Mosgiel and Milton. There are eight teams ranging from year 7 to year 13 pupils.

 

Mt Aspiring College

Janus Staufenberg, Alex Young, Nick Toepfer, Callum Rennie, Joseph Wilson, Harrison Brown, Julius Staufenberg, Wilfred Spearing and Leo Staufenberg all competed in the South Island and New Zealand secondary schools mountain bike championships in Dunedin. Overall, MAC was the top school in Otago and came seventh of 57 schools nationwide. Julius Staufenberg was second in the New Zealand schools under-14 cross-country, and Wilfred Spearing was second overall in the three under-14 events.

The Mt Aspiring clay target team won silver at the national secondary schools championships in Christchurch. The team consisted of Ben Robertson, Lachie Weir, Lachlan Woods, Cody Sarginson and Ty Sarginson. Ben Robertson was selected to shoot in the prestigious McIntosh team, and Lachie Weir was selected to shoot for the South Island team.

Mt Aspiring College pupils competed well at the South Island bowhunters championships in Hawea: Brayden Horton (third, compound junior), Luca Georgalli (first, compound junior), Jahnaan Hodson (first, traditional longbow), Magdalena Fassl (first, women's traditional longbow) and Hayden Smith (third, men's traditional longbow).

The equestrian team (Grace Thomson, Brooke Elstob, Zoe McNeilly and Alex Thomson) finished fifth in the interschool showjumping in Gore, gaining some great individual results and podium placings.

 

Kavanagh College

Kavanagh held its annual sports awards recently and the guest speaker was former Black Caps opener Craig Cumming. Winners of the premier awards were.-Pupil coach: Theresa Cordtz Kata coached the year 7A netball team and umpired every Saturday. She also coached junior touch and volleyball teams.

Team: The boys senior A basketball team won the New Zealand secondary schools A tournament in Palmerston North.

McLaughlan Trophy (contribution to sport): Matt Kelly has been the mainstay of boys football for many years. His leadership and playing skills have been exceptional.

Senior sportsperson: Jack O'Leary won bronze at the world junior rowing championships in Europe and then competed at the Youth Olympics in China.

 

Queen's High School

Queen's sportspeople were acknowledged at the annual sport and cultural awards evening. Ex-pupil and accomplished mountaineer Shelley Hersey was the guest speaker. Emily White and Louise Nicolson were named best all-round senior and junior sportswomen respectively. Christina Ashton received the Cameron Cup for her outstanding individual achievements in both athletics and aerobics.

Year 10 pupil Jahnas Barbarich-Stevenson continues to make a name for herself in taekwondo. She recently competed in an under-18 tournament in Auckland and won gold in sparring and power, silver in specialty and bronze in patterns.

Morgan Buchanan and Suzanne Kydd came home from the Otago-Southland karate regionals in Cromwell with four placings in the 17-18 development grades for kumite and kata.

At the Otago secondary schools indoor rowing championships, Queen's rowers did well individually and all earned ribbons for places. They won medals and the trophy for the girls 2km team relay with a time of 7min 17sec.

Volleyball, touch, tennis, softball and futsal teams are all experiencing success in the term four competitions, as are two new track cyclists, Sian Remon and Emma Howell.

 

Columba College

The senior cycling team rode to a gold medal in the team time trial at the New Zealand secondary schools championships. Members were Bailey Saville, Ella Harris, Ruby Knight and Phoebe Swale, and the team was coached by Chris Henderson. Bailey Saville gained a silver medal in her individual race.

International netball umpire Jono Bredin was a guest speaker at the recently sports awards. Team of the year was the national champion cycling team. Sports personality and the Inspire Excel Cup went to Phoebe Steele. Charlotte Cahill won the Sports Council Scholarship and Grace Carruthers won the sportsmanship and commitment award. Seven pupils were presented with New Zealand representative badges for 2014. A record number of pupils received Otago badges, while 48 pupils gained one blue, seven gained two blues and Hanna English received three blues.

Abigael Crawford has been selected for the Otago women's golf team.
