Three Dunedin businesses have teamed up with the Asia New Zealand Foundation to educate Otago secondary school pupils in possible careers which could foster understanding and business links between New Zealand and Asian nations.

Television production company NHNZ, computer-based data acquisition systems provider ADInstruments, and automated production and process machinery designer and manufacturer Scott Technology Ltd all have strong links to the Asian economy.

NHNZ and ADInstruments have been invited to pair up with Columba College and Otago Girls' High School respectively, as part of the Business Education Partnership Initiative, in which they will share their business knowledge in a bid to inspire the pupils to become more aware of Asian countries, cultures and economies.

Scott Technology Ltd is waiting to be partnered with a school.

The companies are three of 10 nationwide participating in the initiative.

Asia New Zealand Foundation education director Vanessa Lee said 15 schools in Otago were working with the organisation, which was a non-partisan, non-profit organisation dedicated to building New Zealander's knowledge and understanding of Asia.

Pupils at Columba College visited NHNZ yesterday to see how the business operates and how it is closely aligned with Asia.

NHNZ has also provided the school with DVDs of the programmes the company has made in Asian countries.

Ms Lee said the company would provide inspiration and advice to pupils who were interested in media and communications, and show them how they could be the bridge between New Zealand and Asian countries and cultures.

The number of New Zealanders of Asian ethnic origins would grow to more than 694,000 by 2021, she said.
