It was third time lucky for the best young athletes in Central Otago and the Queenstown Lakes District as the twice-postponed Central Otago Primary Schools Athletics Championship began yesterday in Alexandra. More than 500 pupils from 24 schools took part.

The event was postponed last week and again on Wednesday because of wet weather and convener Mick Enright, of Alexandra, said it was the first time in at least 20 years that had happened.

The temperature reached 23degC yesterday, sending spectators and supporters to the shaded areas around Molyneux Park.

The top athletes from the day have the chance to take part in the Otago Primary School Athletics later this month.
