The father of an 18-month-old toddler who disappeared from his Rotorua home overnight is waiting to be reunited with his son.

James Kiff said he was "unbelievably relieved" at the outcome.

Police have confirmed the toddler has been found safe.

On Facebook, the toddler's father posted in the early hours of this morning saying his child had been abducted.

"My home was broken into last night and the only thing they took was my son Elisaia Kiff," wrote James Kiff.

"[He] was taken from my home when he was sleeping in his bed between 10:15pm and 2:00am this is not a joke and any info would be appreciated. Please share around to bring my son home!."

Elisaia's aunt Sonya Rakei pleaded on Facebook for people to keep an eye out for the child.

"Between the hours of 10pm and 2am last night my nephew was abuducted from his own bed !!!!

"I don't understand why anyone would do this! and im asking for everyone to please keep all eyes out for him if know or see anything to call the police asap!!
we need all hands on deck! please help us! [Sic]"

Police searched for the boy this morning but would not confirm he had been abducted. They have since confirmed he was found safe.

Mr Kiff and his partner were home last night when Elisaia was taken. They didn't hear any noise of anyone coming into the house.

He was speaking to police when the Herald called early this morning. He said he would be able to say more after he had made a full statement to police.

Mr Kiff's post had been shared nearly 4000 times this morning, and some people commented they'd shared it with communities as far away as Wellington and Christchurch.

A relative, who asked not to be named, said Mr Kiff was "very safety conscious" and always locked the house door and shut windows at night.

"This has happened completely out of the blue," the relative said. "We're all in shock."

The family hadn't seen any suspicious behaviour on their street or elsewhere recently which they believed could be linked to Elisaia's disappearance.

"We have no idea how or why this has happened.

"This shouldn't happen in Rotorua.

"[Kiff] is the most humble man. He doesn't deserve this."

The family were putting missing posters up around the city this morning.

"We're sharing this as widely as we can to find him on Facebook and with posters and talking to people around Rotorua."
