5.1 quake shakes lower South Island

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook the lower South Island tonight.

The quake struck 70km southwest of Te Anau at a depth of 90km, at 6.14pm.

It would have been felt in Fiordland, Southland and Otago, but no damage was expected, GNS science said.
