Affco workers to rally in Gisborne

Wairoa meatworkers affected by the Affco lockout will be protesting and holding a rally in Gisborne on Friday.

The action follows an impromptu march and rally by members of the meatworkers union in Napier on Saturday.

Workers are seeking support from the Gisborne community over the dispute, which has locked out 1000 union members in eight Talley's Affco sites in the North Island, including 110 workers in Wairoa.

The company locked out only some of the union members so it could keep plants open, but remaining union members have been striking in solidarity alongside their workmates and are now into their third week.

The union said it would distribute flyers asking for help and donations from the community.

On Friday the Wairoa workers met Maori Party co-leader and Minister of Maori Affairs Dr Pita Sharples at Takitimu Marae in Wairoa.

Dr Sharples was attending a hui to discuss Maori representation on Wairoa District Council but found the industrial dispute the main topic of conversation.

The union hopes that other MPs will show their support at the Gisborne rally.

The rally will be based at the Town Clock and run from 10am to noon.
