A 27-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a two-year-old North Shore girl who suffered serious head injuries this week.
Seini Ikamanu, also called Jane, was admitted to Auckland's Starship Hospital on Wednesday evening and yesterday underwent surgery to relieve swelling in her brain.
She remained in critical condition today and doctors told family it was not clear whether she would survive.
The man was arrested today by the North Shore police child abuse team.
Staff had been at an address on Ranch Avenue, in the suburb of Beach Haven, investigating the circumstances which led to Jane's injury.
The man will appear in North Shore District Court tomorrow and police said more charges would be laid once the full extent of the girl's injuries was known.
