Body in Waikato River expected to be missing man

The man's body recovered from the Waikato River yesterday is expected to be confirmed today as that of missing Hamilton man Nicholas "Tommy" Atkins.

Hamilton police said the body was found submerged between the eastern bank and the first pillar of the Fairfield Bridge shortly before 11am yesterday.

Truck driver Mr Atkins, 35, had not been seen since walking out of his suburban Fairview Downs homes in the early hours of July 30.

His family found some of his clothes on the banks of the river the following day and family and police spent several days searching for him.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of Hamilton police, said a formal identification of the body was likely after a post mortem examination.

Father-of-one Mr Atkins' father, Norm, said yesterday he had no doubt it was his son's body.

"It's going to be him, from where they've found him," he told The Waikato Times.

The coroner has been informed.
