Police officers, including a forensic team, were at the scene at Sarsfield St, near the southern end of the harbour bridge.
The woman was struck by a car about 2km away on Ponsonby Rd at the intersection with Williamson Ave.
She was understood to have been getting out of a taxi.
St John Ambulance was alerted about 4.20am and two crews were sent out to attend to the woman, a spokeswoman said.
