A 50-year-old man is to appear in court today after a multi-car crash left an elderly man dead on Auckland's North Shore.
The fatal crash yesterday involved at least five cars, including a police car.
A Jeep Cherokee reportedly hit the back of the police car and shunted it into the intersection of Bush Rd and Rosedale Rd about 1pm and the Jeep then rolled on top of the elderly man's car, killing him instantly.
Police said today the driver of the Jeep would appear in North Shore District Court today on a charge of dangerous driving and could face more serious charges.
A post mortem examination on the body of the elderly victim, believed to be in his early 70s, was due today. His name has yet to be released.
Police said the patrol car was on its way to an incident when it was held up at the intersection by traffic and came to a virtual stop.
Police said yesterday the two officers in the car noticed the Cherokee coming up fast behind them and tried to avoid the impact by moving into another lane.
However, they were hit from behind and shunted forward about 50 metres.
