A Nelson police officer charged with careless driving has been granted diversion.
The officer crashed into another car after he did a U-turn on State Highway 6 outside Nelson to pursue a speeding vehicle on June 1.
His unmarked police car and the other vehicle were moderately damaged.
No one was injured.
He has name suppression.
Police are expected to withdraw the careless driving charge after the officer completed his diversion and appeared in court next month, Radio New Zealand reported.
Diversion was often granted to first time offenders if they pleaded guilty and undertook directions from the court, which might include apologising to the victim and paying reparation.
In 2007, a Blenheim police officer did a U-turn in the Buller Gorge to pursue a speeding motorcyclist and crashed into two motorcyclists who were seriously injured.
Anthony Dale Bridgman, 58, was ordered to pay each of his victims $30,000 reparation, undertake 100 hours of community service and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
