Telecom says a fault that affected emergency calls from mobile phones and landlines in the Auckland region this morning has been resolved.
But there may still be some problems for callers in West Auckland.
The company was alerted that people were not getting through to emergency services about 3.30am.
People dialling the emergency number were mostly hearing either an engaged signal or the call was not getting through.
It appeared to be an intermittent problem with some calls getting through on the line.
This latest issue is further embarrassment to the telecommunications giant after earlier this week scrambling to deal with their forth outage of their flagship XT mobile network in two months.
This morning, Telecom's media relations manager Mark Watts said the issue affected all mobile and landline networks.
He could not say what the problem was, but told Radio New Zealand it appeared to be related to 111 calls "transmitting through that part of the network run in south Auckland".
"So what we did when we became aware of the problem was to divert those calls through to the North Shore node, or that part of our network to ensure those calls could get through and also followed up all of the missed calls we are aware of." Mr Watts could not guarantee the problem would not occur again.
Emergency services would be disappointed in the network, he said.
"We're pretty disappointed too. This shouldn't have happened. "New Zealanders rely hugely on 111 emergency services calling and that's why Telecom has thrown everything it could at it this morning to put in the necessary diversions and to get it working for callers. And it is now." Any person still unable to get through to police was urged to instead call either their local police station or 09 571 2800.
A police northern communications spokesman told NZPA he had been told the number of calls getting through this morning were "less than normal", but he did not have official figures.
A spokeswoman for Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce said Telecom was keeping him informed. "Officials are monitoring the situation and will investigate this latest fault with Telecom." Mr Watts said today's problems were "not a good look" following earlier issues with their XT mobile network.
The most recent outage happened on Monday for customers living south of Taupo.
During that occasion, one customer was unable to get through to the 111 service to report an assault on a man in Christchurch.
Telecom has spent millions of dollars compensating customers affected by the XT network problems.
The company has said the latest 111 problem in Auckland had nothing to do with the XT network.
