A truck driver is dead and another seriously injured after two logging trucks crashed head-on near Tolaga Bay on the East Coast today.
Police said the crash occurred about 12.50pm on Tauwhareparae Rd (SH35).
Both drivers had to be cut from their vehicles after the collision. One truck had a full load of logs while the other was empty. One driver died at the scene and the other was flown by rescue helicopter to Gisborne Hospital.
The East Coast highway will be closed for several hours and motorists are advised to take alternative routes. Two heavy cranes are being brought in to move the trucks.
The police Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit are investigating.
