The woman and baby who fell to their deaths from an Auckland apartment tower were Mexican and had only been in New Zealand a few weeks.
Residents heard the 36-year-old woman and her three-month-old daughter plunge at least 20 storeys of the 37-storey Auckland Harbour Oaks Hotel and Apartments in Gore St at about 5:20pm yesterday.
Police today revealed the pair were Mexican and had arrived in New Zealand midway through last month.
Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said the child's father had arrived in Auckland from another part of the country today and would help identify the bodies.
Post-mortem examinations began this morning.
Police, who are investigating on behalf of the coroner, are not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths.
By this morning the bodies appeared to have been removed from the area near the complex's swimming pool.
One couple said they saw a woman with a baby in a highly distressed state in the lobby about half an hour before the deaths.
The woman was yelling into a cellphone.
"She wasn't speaking English," one said. "She was just crazy, definitely distressed ... The baby was wrapped in a blanket. They were sitting in the lobby. The baby wasn't crying."
Just before 5.30pm, resident Saj Din heard what sounded like an explosion as he watched television in his 12th-floor apartment.
He heard sirens and looked out of his window.
"There were a couple of bodies. The deck around the pool was smashed up.
"It was an ugly sight. I knew they were gone."
Australian tourist Peter McMahon was exercising with his 12-year-old son in the gym on the ground floor overlooking the pool when he heard a loud bang.
"I looked up and saw the body was right there and I just grabbed my son.
"There was nothing we could do because she was obviously dead," Mr McMahon said.
