Fiji police investigate NZ man's fatal beating

Police are continuing investigations into the brutal death of a New Zealander in Fiji.

Tony Groom, 55, who ran a charter boat business in Nadi, was beaten up in an rough part of the town, on July 8 but was not admitted to hospital until he collapsed on July 16. He died last Thursday.

Police were still investigating and had not made any arrests, Constable Amol of Nadi Police told NZPA today.

Mr Groom was a former West Coast businessman. He ran the Ashley Motel in Greymouth for many years before moving to Christchurch and then Nadi where he started his charter boat operation.

He commuted between the two countries for a while before moving permanently to Nadi last year.

Mr Groom is survived by a daughter and his funeral was being held in Nadi today.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of the case and had offered consular assistance to the family.
