Five drug arrests in south

Southern police have made five arrests as part of a recent national undercover operation that hauled in more than $12million in drugs and property.

Two homes in the district were searched during the operation, resulting in the arrests and a combined 52 drug-related charges.

Police seized 89g of cannabis valued at about $2000 on the street along with 1g of BZP.

Two motorcycles and the property the drugs were found in were seized.

One of the offenders had gang connections, a police media spokeswoman said.

Four others arrested were known to police.

Nationally, 900g of methamphetamine valued at about $750,000 and 42kg of cannabis valued at about $367,000 were seized in the seven-month operation along with 89 cannabis plants and seven firearms.

Most of the methamphetamine was found in the Bay of Plenty and eastern North Island.

Detective Inspector Craig Scott, of Wellington, said police were concerned about 40 children were found at homes that were being used in drug activities.

In one instance, a woman was involved in the sale of methamphetamine to an undercover officer while breast-feeding her baby.

Insp Scott called this "completely unacceptable''.

Two gang chapter presidents were also arrested during the operation and several gangs were infiltrated, he said.

Nationally, police arrested 155 people.
