Four held over fatal Nelson shooting

Four people have been taken into police custody following a fatal shooting in Nelson in which a 22-year-old man was shot dead.

The man was shot dead during a confrontation between two groups of youths at Branford Park, near the central city, about 6pm, Detective Inspector John Winter said.

The shooter and three others were found by police at a Richmond address about 11pm. Mr Winter said he was pleased "that the matter had moved toward an early resolution" but it was not yet clear how the confrontation began.

The victim's body would remain at the park overnight and a scene examination would be done tomorrow, he said.

A number of witnesses would also be interviewed.

A baseball bat was also used in the fight and another man suffered moderate head injuries.

He was being treated at Nelson Hospital.

Mr Winter said it was not yet clear what charges the offenders would face.
