Gisborne community mourns boulder victim

A tramper killed after she was trapped under a boulder in the Raukumara Ranges near Ruatoria, 130km northeast of Gisborne, was Gisborne pharmacist Philippa Wilson.

Mrs Wilson (55) and three other adults entered the Aratipuna Trail on Saturday morning to begin a three-day tramp to Waihau Bay, Gisborne acting Sergeant Rebecca Pepere said.

On Saturday night, Mrs Wilson died after she tried to move around a boulder on the track when it rolled over - trapping her underneath.

Two of her companions were unable to move the boulder and she was dead by the time the third companion arrived, Ms Pepere said.

The party activated their emergency beacon, but poor weather prevented the emergency helicopter from getting to them until Sunday morning.

The Gisborne Herald reported the community was mourning the death of Mrs Wilson, who was known as Pip, and was wife of Gisborne District Councillor Brian Wilson.

Mr Wilson was a coach of the gold medal-winning New Zealand kayaking team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The couple had three sons, Sam, James and Phil. Mayor Meng Foon said he and councillors were deeply shocked and saddened by the news of this tragic accident.

"Pip was a cheerful woman who took part in so many things," he said.

" At every community event, from the Anzac Day service to children's Christmas parties, she was always present playing in the band."

Mrs Wilson played the horn in the Gisborne Civic Band, the Gisborne Concert Band and numerous other groups.

She was also actively involved with young people, as one of the five adult support players in the Gisborne Youth Concert Band.

Her funeral will be in Gisborne on Wednesday.
