Heavy rain causes surface flooding

Heavy rain hit the country overnight causing surface flooding and slips, but the worst is over.

MetService issued a severe weather warning yesterday ahead of a low in the Tasman Sea bringing heavy, thundery rain to parts of the country.

It was particularly heavy in Taranaki, which recorded 86mm of rain and fire services were kept busy with more than 30 callouts in the region overnight.

Most of those were for leaking roofs and blocked drains.

Marlborough and Nelson also had heavy rainfall, which forced the Nelson Arts Festival to postpone some of its activities yesterday until Wednesday or Thursday.

There was a slip and minor surface flooding on State Highway 3 near Brixton in New Plymouth this morning but no roads were closed.

Scattered rain was still expected in Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough today (Tuesday) and showers were likely over the North Island.

However, the front has since moved east of the country and all heavy rainfall warnings have been lifted.
