Hell's Angels launch patch ban challenge

Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club today launched their bid to scrap Wanganui's controversial gang patch ban.

Under a bylaw, Whanganui District Council introduced last September, gang members wearing insignia in the city could be fined $2000 and the insignia confiscated.

Christchurch lawyers Lane Neave lodged an application in the High Court at Wanganui for a judicial review of the bylaw in July on behalf of Auckland-based member Philip Ernest Schubert.

Mr Schubert's lawyers argued the council overstepped its powers with the bylaw because it introduced a prohibition, which it does not have the power to do.

Lawyers for the council will argue their case later today and the decision is expected to be reserved.
