King's College pupil dies after ball

Auckland secondary school King's College has again been struck by tragedy.

A pupil, David Gaynor, died after leaving last night's school ball, the Sunday Star Times reported.

Headmaster Bradley Fenner and the boy's father, New Zealand Herald business columnist and company director Brian Gaynor, confirmed the death to the newspaper.

The prestigious south Auckland secondary school has been trying to shake its reputation of having a drinking culture but its ball was last night marred by heavy alcohol consumption.

An ambulance was called to the Eden Park function centre to treat a "very boozed" party-goer.

Three students from the school died last year, including 16-year-old James Webster.

He collapsed unconscious after drinking spirits at a 16th birthday party in Auckland.

Taken to a friend's home to sleep it off, he was found dead the next morning.

At an inquest into his death Coroner Gordon Matenga suggested parents and schools develop alcohol awareness programmes to teach young people about being safe with alcohol.

Nobody from the college was immediately available for comment today.
