A man was hit and killed by a train in Lower Hutt this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Wingate Station in Avalon, Lower Hutt about 1.20pm where a man in his 60s had been hit by a train, a central police communications spokesman said.
Bus services replaced trains for much of the afternoon while emergency services were at the scene, but by 4.30pm train services were fully operational.
The train involved was a passenger train.
Police were still making inquiries into the incident.
