Murder accused fires lawyer on eve of trial

A 39-year-old murder accused has fired his lawyer and will represent and defend himself in court today.

The man, who has name suppression removed his counsel, Russell Fairbrother, and will now represent himself as he faces murder and kidnapping charges in the High Court at Napier in relation to the death of Johnny Charles Wright.

Justice Joe Williams however invoked an amicus (friend of the court) and to preserve the integrity of the trial Mr Fairbrother will conduct the cross-examination of the Crown witnesses.
