The Christchurch man has been charged with alleged abusive behaviour, failing to wear a mask at Countdown Ferrymead on Ferry Rd, disorderly behaviour, resisting police and wilful trespass.
The 45-year-old was taken into custody after officers and the public reportedly wrestled him to the ground.
He was due to appear in the district court on Friday.
A police spokesperson said the man was understood to be acting in an aggressive manner towards staff at the supermarket.
A Countdown spokesperson said staff are being supported after the incident.
"It’s particularly distressing at a time when the country is experiencing a community outbreak of Covid-19."
It comes after a security guard at a Christchurch supermarket had to be tested for Covid-19 after a customer allegedly spat at him when they were refused entry.
The incident happened on Friday afternoon at the Church Corner store. The man had been previously trespassed for abusive behaviour and was refused entry to the store.
He then allegedly spat on the security guard and refused to leave, prompting a police callout. A Countdown spokesperson said the guard was receiving support.
